BREAKING: Ogogo Dies at 66 After Stage-Four Cancer Battle, Burial Set for Monday in Ilaro

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66.

Ogogo died at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, according to a burial announcement issued by veteran actor Prince Jide Kosoko.

Kosoko announced that Ogogo’s remains would be taken to his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Sunday, ahead of his burial rites.

The announcement stated that a laying-in-state ceremony will hold on Monday, August 24, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pavilion in Ilaro.

The Ilaro Muslim Community has also announced arrangements for his burial prayer. According to the community’s announcement, the burial prayer will take place at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground in Ilaro at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

The announcement was shared by Best of Nollywood founder, Seun Oloketuyi, on his Instagram page.

Ogogo’s death

Ogogo’s death comes after a battle with stage-four cancer, a condition his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, publicly disclosed earlier this month.

The family’s revelation triggered an outpouring of prayers and support from colleagues, fans and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond.

Several leading Yoruba actors also gathered in Lagos days ago for a special prayer session for the veteran actor as efforts continued to find medical assistance for him.

Despite those efforts, Ogogo died on Sunday afternoon. His death was subsequently confirmed by multiple sources within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The actor was one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema, building a career that spanned several decades as an actor, filmmaker and screenwriter.

His passing marks the loss of one of the industry’s most recognisable veteran performers.

His remains are expected in Ilaro ahead of Monday’s funeral rites.

The entertainment industry and his numerous admirers are now mourning the actor as preparations begin for his final journey home.
