ASUU Approves Strikes for 20 Universities Over 2025 Pact

​ABUJA — Academic activities face fresh disruptions nationwide as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) authorised 20 university chapters to commence processes for industrial action.

​The decision follows the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja. According to a statement signed by ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the move is a direct response to the delayed implementation of the December 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the failure of several state-owned institutions to adopt the terms.

​Ultimatums and Active Stoppages

​Affected chapters have been directed to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective managements before downing tools. Meanwhile, full-scale indefinite strikes have already commenced at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (over unpaid entitlements exceeding N3bn) and Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri (over stalled welfare packages and promotion arrears dating back to 2016).

• ​Abia State University, Uturu

• ​Imo State University, Owerri

• ​Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island

• ​University of Africa, Toru-Orua

• ​Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa

• ​Taraba State University, Jalingo

• ​University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa

• ​Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo

• ​Kaduna State University

• ​Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil

• ​Northwest University, Kano

• ​Enugu State University of Science and Technology

​ASUU leadership stressed that while the union remains open to constructive dialogue, recalcitrant state governments and authorities failing to clear outstanding Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and minimum wage adjustments will face coordinated resistance. An emergency NEC meeting has been scheduled for late August or early September to review compliance.
