ValidViewNetwork reports that Accord has urged the Federal Government and security authorities to ensure that the deployment of security personnel does not intimidate voters or undermine confidence in the electoral process.

Accord Raises Alarm Ahead of August 15

The warning comes barely one week before Osun voters are expected to choose their governor for the next administration.

The election has attracted significant political attention, with Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking another term and opposition parties mounting a serious challenge.

Accord’s position places election security at the centre of the final phase of the campaign. The party is calling for security measures that protect voters without creating an atmosphere of fear around polling centres.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the debate over security deployment has become an important part of Nigeria’s electoral conversations, particularly during closely contested elections.

‘Election Is Not Warfare’

Accord’s central message is that security operations must not overwhelm the democratic character of the election.

The party has urged the Federal Government to avoid what it describes as the militarisation of the Osun poll. Its position is that voters should be able to participate without intimidation, while security personnel should focus on protecting lives, electoral officials and election materials.

The warning comes as political parties intensify their mobilisation across the state.

Why Security Matters in Osun

Election security remains a legitimate concern in Nigeria.Security agencies are expected to prevent violence, protect electoral materials and respond to threats during elections.

However, excessive or poorly managed security deployment can also create public anxiety and raise questions about whether voters feel free to participate.

That balance will be particularly important in Osun, where the political contest has become increasingly intense.

Adeleke Faces Opposition Challenge

Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking re-election in the August 15 contest. His administration has highlighted its record in office as part of its campaign for another term.

Opposition parties have, however, challenged the governor’s performance and are seeking to persuade Osun voters to change the state’s political direction.

The competing campaigns have made the election one of the most closely watched political contests in the country.

Osun’s Political Stakes Go Beyond 2026

The significance of the election extends beyond who occupies the Osun Government House.

Osun remains an important political state in the South-West, and its electoral outcome will attract attention as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The conduct of the August 15 election could therefore influence political calculations well beyond Osun.

For that reason, concerns about voter safety, electoral neutrality and the conduct of security agencies are likely to remain prominent as election day approaches.

What Voters Expect

For millions of Nigerians watching the Osun contest, the basic expectation is straightforward.

Security agencies should protect voters without intimidating them. Political parties should campaign without inciting violence.Electoral officials should administer the process transparently.

And voters should be allowed to make their choices freely.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the credibility of the Osun election will ultimately depend not only on the number of security personnel deployed, but on how those personnel conduct themselves before, during and after voting.

The responsibility also extends to the political actors competing for power. No election can be considered truly successful if citizens are prevented from freely exercising their democratic rights.

As August 15 approaches, Osun faces a simple but consequential test: whether security will serve democracy or overshadow it. The answer will be determined not by campaign promises, but by what happens at polling units across the state.
