Osun Decides: Police Deploy 15,000 Personnel, Warn Election Offenders

Security operation begins ahead of August 15 governorship election as police promise a firm response to electoral violence.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the deployment of about 15,000 personnel for the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election, as authorities intensify security preparations amid heightened political tension across the state.

The announcement came on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, during a meeting with officers deployed for election duties in Osogbo.

Massive Security Deployment Ahead of Poll

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Osun governorship election, Samuel Etaifo, said the Inspector General of Police approved one of the largest security deployments for any off-cycle governorship election.

“As I speak with you the total number of officers that will come for this election we should be expecting nothing less than 15,000. This includes conventional policemen, specialists, dog section, medical, PMF. The DIG and AIG in charge of this operations are coming.”

IGP Ordered Early Deployment

The police commissioner explained that his deployment came earlier than originally planned because of rising political tension across the state.

“I will be the CP in charge of the election. That is why the IGP has deployed me here. We are supposed to arrive here about four or five days before the election but because of the heightened tension IGP said I should come.”

ValidViewNetwork reports that additional security personnel had already been deployed to Osun before Wednesday’s announcement following reports of increasing violence linked to political activities.

Police Warn Against Electoral Violence

Etaifo directed officers to remain professional throughout the election and warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the process would face the full weight of the law. He stressed that political status or influence would not shield offenders from prosecution.

Arrested Offenders To Face Abuja Investigation

The police also announced that anyone arrested for violating electoral laws during the governorship election would be transferred to Abuja.

“Arrested violators of electoral laws will be moved straight to Abuja. This election is a federal government election. Anybody arrested will be taken to Abuja. That’s the order.”

The warning comes as security agencies seek to discourage vote buying, ballot snatching, intimidation of voters and other election-related offences.

Fourteen Candidates In The Race

The Osun State governorship election will hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026. A total of 14 candidates, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, are expected to contest for the state’s highest office.
