NANS warns of statewide protests if government and security agencies fail to act within three days.

ABEOKUTA, Ogun State | August 5, 2026

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given the Ogun State Government and security agencies a 72 hour ultimatum to rescue five abducted students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, arrest those behind the killing of a student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, and address the growing wave of insecurity around tertiary institutions across the state.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the students’ body warned it would commence sustained peaceful protests across Ogun State if its demands are not met within the stipulated period.

NANS Raises Alarm Over Campus Insecurity

The ultimatum was issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Abeokuta.

Addressing journalists, NANS Secretary General, Oladimeji Uthman, popularly known as Dan Fodio, said students across Ogun State now live under constant fear because of kidnappings, armed robberies, cult violence, rape and other violent crimes.

He said, “The recent abduction of five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, the killing of a female student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, and repeated armed robbery attacks around Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, and Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic underscore the worsening security situation in the state.”

He added that students can no longer move freely between classrooms and hostels without fear of attack.

Security Agencies Accused Of Ignoring Dialogue

Uthman also accused security agencies of ignoring previous efforts by NANS to seek collaborative solutions to the crisis.

According to him, letters requesting strategic meetings with security agencies received no response despite worsening attacks on students.

“It is deeply regrettable that despite the growing insecurity across off campus hostels, our requests for strategic engagement were not honoured,” he said.

ValidViewNetwork reports that NANS believes stronger collaboration between student leaders and security agencies could have helped prevent some of the recent attacks.

Protest Threat If Demands Are Ignored

The association demanded that security agencies rescue the five abducted Gateway ICT Polytechnic students, arrest those responsible for the murder of Ahmed Sekinat, prosecute all perpetrators and improve security around tertiary institutions.

It also urged the Ogun State Government to send a high powered delegation to condole with the family of the slain student and visit another victim currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

NANS warned that failure to comply within 72 hours would trigger sustained peaceful mass protests across the state.

Despite its criticism, the association commended the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for deploying an operational police aircraft to strengthen security operations in Ogun State.

According to NANS, the move could improve aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and rescue operations. However, the association insisted that visible results must now follow.

Calls For Lasting Security Measures

To strengthen campus security, NANS proposed increased patrols around tertiary institutions, permanent security posts in vulnerable student communities, deployment of the Ogun State Anti Violent Crime Team to campuses, stronger collaboration among institutions, host communities and security agencies, and the establishment of an Ogun Security Agencies Student Leaders Relations Forum.

The latest ultimatum follows a series of attacks that have unsettled students across Ogun State. On July 27, 2026, Ahmed Sekinat, an HND II Marketing student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, was killed during a robbery attack in the Eruku community, while another student sustained gunshot injuries.

On the night of July 29, 2026, five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were abducted from a private hostel in Ipara Remo.

The growing pattern has transformed isolated criminal incidents into a wider security concern for tertiary institutions across Ogun State.

The next 72 hours may therefore determine whether authorities can restore students’ confidence through decisive action or face sustained public protests led by Nigeria’s largest student body
