The Nigerian hip-hop scene is no stranger to the charismatic persona of Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, professionally known as Vector, but the “King Kong” hitmaker recently offered a rare glimpse into the unconventional beginning of his personal life. In a candid conversation on the Mentality With Ebuka podcast, the rapper revealed that his path to meeting his wife, Yinka Coker, whom he married in 2022, was far from traditional.
Far from the stereotypical club encounter, the connection was sparked by an unexpected shared passion for lyricism. Vector recounted that his initial attraction to his future partner was ignited at a club where she impressed him by fluently rapping a song by the legendary Jamaican-American artiste, Heavy D.
”I met my woman in the club, and she is super homely; who would have thought? My first attraction to her was that she was rapping Heavy D’s song, and I was attracted to the fact that she could rap,” Vector explained.
However, the path to romance did not start with a smooth pickup line. Vector humorously admitted that their first interaction involved a bit of playful teasing. He opted for a bold, albeit cheeky, ice-breaker regarding her chipped toenail, noting that the polish had worn off. This blunt approach left Coker momentarily bewildered, questioning the identity of the man who dared to critique her grooming.
Beyond the story of their first meeting, Vector emphasized that his wife is remarkably “homely”—a quality that stands in stark contrast to the glitzy environment where they first crossed paths.
Reflecting on his broader life experiences, the father of three also opened up about the transformative power of fatherhood. Growing up in the barracks, Vector describes his early upbringing as “rough-around-the-edges.” He credits his role as a “girl dad” with fundamentally shifting his perspective, helping him navigate the pressures of manhood with a newfound sense of calm.
”Men who need love the most get girls as kids because they shower you with love every day. It has helped me change my perspective on life in general,” he shared. “It helps you ease up as a man because there’s so much tension that comes with being one. So, I’m enjoying the experience.”
