MONGUNO — Security forces operating under the auspices of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and Operation HADIN KAI have notched a significant victory in the ongoing campaign against insurgency in Northeast Nigeria, successfully apprehending a high-value suspect linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Isa Janyu, was taken into custody during an intelligence-led operation conducted on the evening of July 4. According to field reports, the arrest occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. at the Kasuwan Shanu market area in Monguno, Borno State. The operation was a coordinated effort between the Military Intelligence Brigade (MIB) of Sector 3 and the local Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Preliminary investigations suggest that Janyu, a native of Arianna Mai Massallachi village in Kukawa Local Government Area, served as a crucial logistics asset for insurgent cells. His alleged specialization involved identifying affluent residents within the community, providing ISWAP elements with the necessary intelligence to facilitate targeted kidnappings for ransom.
Upon his arrest, security operatives recovered several items from the suspect, including a Tecno mobile device—believed to be a primary tool for his illicit communications—a knife, and personal effects. A sum of ₦10,000 in cash was also confiscated as part of the evidence.
The suspect is currently being held at the Sector 3 Military Intelligence Brigade headquarters, where he is undergoing intensive interrogation. Military authorities view this capture as a strategic step toward dismantling the broader network of informants who have been instrumental in sustaining terrorist activities in the region.
While the general security climate in the theatre of operations is reported to be stable, command sources emphasized that the environment remains volatile. Troops have been instructed to maintain a high state of operational readiness, continuing their sustained offensive against insurgent remnants to ensure the safety of civilians in the Borno axis.
