​EFCC Arraigns Miyetti Allah Leader Bodejo Over $2.33m Fraud

​The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally arraigned the National President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo, before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a 12-count charge related to money laundering and alleged terrorism financing.

​The Arraignment

​Presided over by Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo, the court proceedings on Wednesday, July 9, 2026, saw Bodejo plead “not guilty” to all counts brought against him. The charges, filed by the prosecution on June 25, 2026, allege that Bodejo knowingly accepted large sums of physical foreign currency in violation of Nigeria’s money laundering statutes.

​Allegations of Financial Misconduct

​The EFCC’s case centers on the accumulation of approximately $2.33 million in cash, which the commission claims was received without following mandatory financial institutional routing processes. Prosecutors allege these funds were linked to proceeds of unlawful activities.

​Specific counts in the charge sheet highlight several high-value transactions involving Sa’idu Abubakar, a former Accountant-General of Bauchi State who is currently in police custody:

• ​January 11, 2022: Receipt of $100,000 in physical currency.

• ​February 7, 2024: Receipt of $980,000 in physical currency.

• ​Other instances: Additional tranches, including a $500,000 payment in March 2024, were also cited as exceeding the legal cash transaction thresholds.

​Bail Dispute and Judicial Order

​Following the plea, the defense counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, moved for the court to grant bail based on an application filed on June 30, 2026.

​This request was met with strong opposition from the prosecution counsel, Wahab Shittu, SAN. In a 28-paragraph counter-affidavit, the EFCC argued that the defendant poses a “public risk” and is a flight risk. Shittu further contended that the Department of State Services (DSS) is monitoring the defendant and expressed concern that, given his influence, Bodejo could manipulate witnesses and obstruct the ongoing trial.

​Justice Ekwo ordered that Bodejo be remanded at the EFCC’s holding facility. The court has adjourned the matter until July 20, 2026, for a formal ruling on the bail application.
