AJDABIYA, LIBYA — Local law enforcement in the Libyan city of Ajdabiya intervened this week to quell a volatile public disturbance involving football supporters, resulting in the detention of a group of Argentina fans.
The incident, which authorities described as a significant breach of public order, occurred amidst heightened fervor surrounding the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. According to local police reports, a group of Argentina supporters—celebrating their national team’s progression in the tournament—engaged in a confrontational dispute with Egyptian fans gathered in the same area.
The situation escalated quickly, leading to what officials characterized as a chaotic scene that disrupted local traffic and threatened public safety. Libyan police moved to disperse the crowds, ultimately apprehending several individuals associated with the Argentina supporters’ group.
In a highly controversial development following the arrests, police confirmed that they subjected the detained individuals to a forced shaving of their heads. Officials defended the action, describing it as a punitive measure intended to address the group’s disruptive behavior and what they termed as “inflammatory displays of support” specifically directed against Egyptian fans.

The incident highlights the intense emotional stakes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which has captivated global audiences, including significant following across North Africa. As the tournament progresses to the quarter-final stage, authorities in various regions remain on high alert, aiming to balance passionate fan expression with the maintenance of community order.
At this time, there have been no further reports of unrest in the Ajdabiya area, and local police maintain that the situation is under control.
