Delta Command Demotes Officers Over POS Extortion Scandal

​ASABA — The Delta State Police Command has officially demoted two officers following their involvement in an extortion scandal where they were captured on camera using a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal to process illicit payments from a motorist.

​The disciplinary action, confirmed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, follows the conclusion of an orderly room trial for Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to the ‘C’ Division in Asaba.

​Disciplinary Verdict

​The investigation, prompted by a viral video from January 13, 2026, found the officers guilty of “disobedience to lawful order, extortion, and discreditable conduct,” which violates the Police Act of 2020. Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the following demotions:

• ​Inspector Augustine Jeremiah has been reduced to the rank of Sergeant.
• ​Corporal Miracle Ehirim has been reduced to the rank of Constable.

​Zero-Tolerance for POS Extortion

​The Command reiterated that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, maintains a strict prohibition on the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations.

​CP Oyeniyi emphasized that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise. He noted that the disciplinary measures are intended to serve as a deterrent and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to accountability and restoring public trust.
