An Indianapolis-bound flight was forced to make an emergency return on Tuesday after a passenger attempted to force open the aircraft’s cabin door shortly after takeoff.
United Airlines Flight 3989, a Mesa Airlines-operated Embraer 175 regional jet, had been airborne for just 15 minutes while en route to Houston when the situation escalated. According to audio captured by ATC.com, the flight crew alerted air traffic control to the immediate threat.
”We have a belligerent passenger trying to open the cabin door,” the pilot reported. “We have passengers trying to get him secured in a seat right now.”
The aircraft landed safely back at Indianapolis International Airport, where it was met by local law enforcement. A spokesperson for Mesa Airlines confirmed that the individual was successfully deplaned and subsequently taken into custody by the Indianapolis Airport Authority. The remaining passengers and crew were unharmed, and the flight eventually reached its destination in Houston with a delay of nearly two hours.
This incident is the latest in a troubling trend of unruly passenger behavior. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that over 830 such cases have been documented so far this year.
Recent weeks have seen a series of similar high-profile disruptions, including a man attempting to breach the exit door on a Frontier Airlines flight—only to be neutralized by a passenger trained in jiu-jitsu—and a separate United Airlines flight forced to divert to Madison, Wisconsin, after a passenger made repeated attempts to breach the cockpit.
The FAA maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding such behavior. Disruptive individuals may face severe consequences, including significant criminal charges and civil penalties that can exceed $43,000 per violation. The agency continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s emergency landing as it works to address the ongoing rise in mid-flight interference.
