Popular gospel singer Yinka Alaseyori has apologised following criticism that trailed her comments on the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
In a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, the singer expressed regret over her earlier remarks, saying she never intended to undermine the pain of the victims, their families, or concerned Nigerians.
Alaseyori explained that her previous video, in which she addressed the kidnapping incident and referenced the efforts of government agencies, was misunderstood by some members of the public.
“I did a video two days ago about the kidnapped children, touching on government, parastatals and every agency. But when I woke up yesterday, I found out that some well-meaning Nigerians were not happy about it, as I made them feel their voices are unheard,” she said.
The gospel artiste noted that she was deeply saddened by the reactions and appealed to Nigerians, especially parents, to forgive her if her comments caused any offence.
“You know me too well that I would never make you feel like that. Mothers, do not be offended. I am sorry. I beg in God’s name. Please, forgive me. I would never think like that. Pardon and forgive me,” she added.
Her apology comes amid widespread backlash over an earlier video in which she urged Nigerians to continue praying over the country’s security challenges while commending the efforts of the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address insecurity and secure the release of abducted victims.
The remarks generated debate on social media, with critics arguing that beyond prayers, authorities must take stronger and more decisive steps to tackle insecurity and ensure the safe return of those in captivity.
The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has continued to attract nationwide concern, with citizens and advocacy groups intensifying calls for improved security measures and swift rescue operations.
