Ondo Approves New Akure Flyover, Releases Funds for Owena Dam Rehabilitation

The Ondo State Executive Council has approved the construction of a 2.38-kilometre flyover bridge in Akure and counterpart funding for the rehabilitation of the Owena Multipurpose Dam as part of efforts to address traffic congestion and improve water supply across the state.

The approvals were among key resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Tuesday.

Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, said the flyover project followed extensive traffic studies which identified the Alagbaka–Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) corridor as one of the state’s busiest and most congested routes.

According to him, the flyover will be constructed along Oba Adesida Road, stretching from Adegbola Junction to the St. Matthias/NNPC Filling Station axis in Alagbaka.

Olawoye explained that the project is expected to significantly ease vehicular movement within the state capital and improve connectivity along the strategic corridor. He added that contractors would commence preliminary surveys immediately ahead of construction.

In a related development, the council approved counterpart funding for the ongoing rehabilitation of the Owena Multipurpose Dam, a major water infrastructure project expected to boost potable water supply in Akure and surrounding local government areas.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Hygiene and Sanitation, Elder Ayodele Akande, disclosed that the dam rehabilitation project is already about 40 per cent completed.

He said the intervention is being supported by development partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank and French Development Bank.

Akande noted that upon completion, the project would expand access to clean and safe drinking water, improve sanitation and help reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases in affected communities.

The approvals underscore the Aiyedatiwa administration’s commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure, improving public services and enhancing the quality of life of residents across Ondo State.
