ABUJA – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) community in the Federal Capital Territory has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a serving corps member (identity withheld pending family notification) who collapsed during a football match on Friday.
The deceased was reportedly participating in a friendly kick-about with fellow corps members and local residents at a popular pitch in the heart of Abuja when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses say the young man, who appeared healthy at the start of the game, suddenly clutched his chest and slumped to the turf midway through the second half.
Desperate Rescue Efforts
Teammates and spectators immediately rushed to his aid, attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before he was hurried to a nearby private hospital. Efforts by medical personnel to revive him proved abortive, and he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival.
”It happened so fast,” said a fellow corps member who was at the scene. “He didn’t collide with anyone. He just stopped running, struggled for breath for a few seconds, and went down. We thought it was a minor cramp or exhaustion until he stopped responding.”
NYSC Reacts
While the NYSC management is yet to release an official statement identifying the deceased, a senior official within the FCT Secretariat confirmed the incident, describing it as a “colossal loss” to the scheme.
”We are deeply saddened. This was a patriotic Nigerian currently at the peak of his service to the fatherland. Our officials have been dispatched to the medical facility, and we are working to establish contact with the next of kin,” the source stated.
Medical experts suggest the cause of death may be linked to sudden cardiac arrest, a condition often triggered by undiagnosed heart issues during strenuous physical activity. This incident has reignited calls for mandatory comprehensive medical screenings for all youth corps members before they engage in intense sporting activities during their service year.
