2027: Makinde, Fayemi, Oyinlola Consult Obasanjo in Abeokuta

ABEOKUTA — As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, led a high-powered political delegation to consult with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The closed-door meeting, held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the elder statesman’s private residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, also had in attendance the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

The high-stakes visit underscores rising behind-the-scenes consultations among key political actors across party lines as the nation maps out its electoral future.

Critical National Issues

Speaking on the objective of the visit, Governor Makinde revealed via his official social media channels that the deliberations focused heavily on the socio-political trajectory of the country and the imperatives of the forthcoming 2027 polls.

”We visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history,” Makinde stated.

While official details of the parley were kept under wraps, sources close to the delegation hinted that the leaders used the platform to tap into Obasanjo’s institutional memory and geopolitical insights. The former president has historically remained a focal point for political figures seeking strategic direction and national consensus during transitional political phases.

A Cross-Party Convergence

The composition of the delegation—spanning different political platforms and governance eras—highlights a growing consensus among moderate and influential political figures on the need for broad-based dialogue to address Nigeria’s mounting economic and security challenges.

Political analysts note that visits of this nature often serve as precursors to wider national realignments as political gladiators position themselves ahead of party primaries and national campaigns for 2027.

As the countdown to the general elections accelerates, further consultations between major stakeholders and elder statesmen are expected to intensify across the geopolitical zones.
