Zenith Bank Plc commemorated its 35th anniversary with a glittering ceremony at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday, August 15, 2025. The milestone event brought together distinguished guests, industry leaders, pioneer customers, long-serving staff, and key stakeholders to celebrate more than three decades of excellence, innovation, and leadership in Nigeria’s banking sector.

Established on May 30, 1990, and commencing operations in July of the same year, Zenith Bank has evolved from modest beginnings into one of Africa’s largest financial institutions, celebrated for its reputation for stability, customer-centric innovation, and digital banking leadership. Throughout its journey, the vision of Founder and Chairman Jim Ovia CFR, high ethical standards, and sustained investment in technology have driven the group’s remarkable growth from a converted residential building to over 454 branches and 167 cash centers nationwide as of 2024.

Recognition for Pioneer Customers and Long-Serving Staff

A moving highlight of the anniversary was the special recognition of the bank’s first customers and staff members who have remained instrumental to Zenith Bank’s impressive trajectory. The awards ceremony honoured pioneer staff like Mrs. Adobi Stella Nwapa, whose three-decade commitment exemplifies the institution’s core values. Group Managing Director/CEO Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji OON described the day as a celebration of trust and dedication, affirming, “Our success has been built on the commitment of our people and the loyalty of our customers. Today, we celebrate both the legacy and the future of Zenith Bank.”

Star-Studded Attendees

The event attracted a stellar guest list, adding prestige to the proceedings. Notable personalities included the Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima GCON (himself a Zenith Bank alumnus), Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Dr Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Prof Babagana Zulum (Borno), Africa’s richest businessman Aliko Dangote GCON, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. Zenith Bank alumni and former governors Peter Obi (Anambra) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) also graced the occasion.

The Chairman’s Dinner & Celebration

The festivities were elevated by impactful keynote speeches, musical performances, and a vibrant atmosphere. Founder Jim Ovia CFR paid tribute to the institution’s resilient journey and the “sustained impact on the economy” which began with his visionary leadership in 1990. Recent years have seen Zenith Bank retain its title as “Best Bank in Nigeria” at the Global Finance Best Banks Awards 2025—its fifth win since 2020—highlighting its operational prowess, profitability, and strong customer focus.
