Learning strategist and higher education consultant Jane Oma has joined the growing conversation surrounding a recent academic controversy involving University of Cambridge Professor Jason Arday, using the moment to deliver a broader message on credibility, integrity and professional reputation.

“The circumstances are quite different, but these conversations continue to raise serious questions about credibility, academic integrity and professional responsibility,” she wrote.

“The most important lesson that we must all take from these is that credibility, integrity and reputation in any field of work we have chosen will trump everything else.”

She continued:

“Over time, every profession reaches a point where your name begins to carry weight. Not your money. Not your qualifications. Not even your title.”

According to her, employers, institutions and society eventually seek consistent and verifiable evidence that an individual’s work, judgment and representation can be trusted.

Degrees May Open Doors, But Trust Keeps Them Open

Oma stressed that qualifications remain important but argued they cannot replace credibility. She maintained that academic degrees, impressive résumés and technical expertise may create opportunities, but only integrity sustains them.

“Our names and qualifications may open doors. Our CVs and expertise may create opportunities. But really, it is our credibility that determines whether people continue to trust us with responsibility. Or not.”
