12-Year-Old Student Chokes to Death in Suspected TikTok Challenge

​A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Yonkers community after a 12-year-old middle school student died Wednesday morning following a choking incident inside his school—an emergency officials fear may be linked to a viral social media trend.

​The sixth-grade boy, described by school leaders as a “bright light” full of energy and joy, suffered a severe medical emergency around 11:40 a.m. inside the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School. According to Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr., the incident did not occur in the cafeteria, but rather in a fourth-floor hallway. Staff members immediately rushed to the boy’s aid, desperately attempting to dislodge food stuck in his throat.

​First responders quickly arrived at the scene and attempted to revive the unresponsive student. He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

​Investigation Focuses on Viral “One Bite” Trend

​The Yonkers Police Department has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the student’s death. Investigators are actively probing whether a viral TikTok stunt known as the “One Bite” challenge played a role in the tragedy. The online trend encourages participants to stuff as much food into their mouths as possible and swallow it in a single bite.

​Local reports indicate that the student may have been attempting the challenge with a donut when he began to choke.

​”Anything about a TikTok challenge, anything about witness statements, the events leading up to this—we’re going to investigate, and we’re going to continue with the investigation from beginning to end,” Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza stated during a press conference on Thursday.

​As investigators work to piece together the timeline, school officials and city leaders are turning their focus toward supporting a devastated campus.

​”As police investigate the nature of the medical emergency, we remain focused on caring for his classmates, teachers and staff who are in terrible pain,” Superintendent Soler said, noting how deeply loved the young student was throughout the building.

​The tragedy has reverberated well beyond the school walls, prompting an outpouring of grief from city officials.

​”Today’s tragic loss is heartbreaking,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. “The death of a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, and our entire Yonkers community is grieving alongside this student’s family, classmates, teachers, and loved ones.”
