Carnage in Yobe as Military Airstrike Hits Border Market; 200 Feared Dead

​MAIDUGURI — A scene of commerce turned into a landscape of carnage on Saturday night when a Nigerian Air Force strike hit a bustling weekly market in Jilli, a community on the porous border between Yobe and Borno states. Local officials and surviving residents report that at least 200 people are feared dead in what appears to be a catastrophic intelligence failure.

​The strike occurred as military jets were reportedly pursuing Boko Haram militants moving through the Jilli axis. While the Nigerian Air Force confirmed conducting operations in the area to neutralize “Islamist insurgents,” their official statement notably omitted any mention of civilian casualties or the destruction of the market.

​A Community in Mourning

​Lawan Zanna Nur Geidam, the traditional head of Fuchimeram ward, described the aftermath as “utterly devastating.” Speaking from the region on Sunday, he confirmed that the death toll has surged as more bodies are recovered from the rubble of the market stalls.

​”As I am speaking to you, over 200 people have lost their lives,” Geidam said. “The injured are being rushed to hospitals in both Geidam and Maiduguri, but the facilities are already overwhelmed.”

​One survivor, 43-year-old Ahmed Ali, who was selling medical supplies when the bombs fell, recalled the moment of impact. “The sound was deafening. I tried to run, but a friend pulled me to the ground. We just lay there as the world exploded around us.” Ali is currently receiving treatment for shrapnel injuries.

​Conflicting Accounts

​The Yobe State government, through its military adviser Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam, acknowledged the “misfire,” noting that people attending the Jilli weekly market from the Geidam Local Government Area were “affected.” However, the military’s central command has remained tight-lipped regarding the specific death toll, only emphasizing their success in targeting terrorist strongholds.

​The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has since activated emergency protocols, though the remote nature of the Jilli axis—located over 200 kilometers from the state capital, Damaturu—has hampered rapid response efforts.

​This incident marks one of the deadliest accidental strikes in the decade-long conflict against Boko Haram and ISWAP. Human rights groups and security analysts have frequently raised alarms over the rising number of civilian casualties resulting from aerial bombardments in the Northeast.
