Zambian Vice-President Mutale Nalumango and seven others have miraculously escaped injury after a Zambia Air Force helicopter crashed moments after take-off in Nakonde, Muchinga Province, on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The Vice-President was conducting an official visit and campaign tour in the border region ahead of the upcoming general elections when the accident occurred. According to eyewitness accounts and official reports, the aircraft encountered difficulties shortly after lifting off, resulting in a crash that left the helicopter significantly damaged.
In the immediate aftermath, emergency response teams, local residents, and the flight crew acted quickly to evacuate all eight occupants from the wreckage. As a standard precautionary measure, Vice-President Nalumango was transported to Nakonde Hospital for a routine medical evaluation. She was declared in good health and has since been discharged.
President Hakainde Hichilema confirmed the incident, stating that he had spoken directly with his deputy following the crash. “We are grateful to God to report that she is in good spirits and unharmed,” the President stated in a national address, thanking emergency responders and citizens for their support.
While investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway, government officials and the United Party for National Development (UPND) have urged the public to refrain from speculation. Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, confirmed that relevant authorities have been tasked with establishing the exact circumstances of the incident.
Despite the harrowing ordeal, officials indicated that the Vice-President is expected to continue her scheduled engagements in the region as the country prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
