The Nigerian Christian community and the global gospel music industry have been plunged into mourning following the transition of veteran gospel minister and evangelist, Racheal Olatoun Soetan.
The respected minister, whose career spanned over four decades, reportedly passed away earlier today, March 13, 2026. While the specific circumstances surrounding her transition remain private, sources close to the family have confirmed the loss of the legendary songstress.
A Legacy of Praise
Evangelist Toun Soetan was more than just a singer; she was a spiritual trailblazer. She is most widely recognized as the original composer of the globally acclaimed worship chorus, “Darling Jesus,” a song that has been translated into numerous languages and sung in churches across every continent.
Starting her professional ministry in 1988 with her band, Toun Soetan and her Trinity Singers, she became a household name in the 1990s. Her music was characterized by deep scriptural roots and a unique ability to blend traditional sounds with contemporary gospel arrangements. Beyond the microphone, she was a dedicated teacher and counselor, often hosting “Praise Clinics” to mentor the younger generation of gospel artists.
Impact Beyond Music
In her later years, Evangelist Soetan expanded her ministry into the world of Christian cinema, collaborating frequently with the Mount Zion Faith Ministries. Her life story—marked by a powerful conversion to Christianity and a steadfast refusal to “charge” for gospel ministrations—served as a beacon of integrity within the industry.
As news of her passing spreads, tributes have begun pouring in from fellow ministers and fans alike, many describing her as a “General in the Army of God” who remained faithful to her calling until the very end. She is survived by her children, including gospel artist Ayobami Soetan, and a vast spiritual family.
