“Unlike You, I’m Open to Scrutiny”: Atiku Challenges Tinubu

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Bola Tinubu to open his records for public scrutiny, pointing to Tinubu’s intervention in an American court case seeking the release of FBI and DEA records concerning him.

Atiku’s camp said the Presidency admitted the FBI and DEA have produced 399 pages of records, with portions redacted.

A Challenge from the Opposition

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to open up his records for public scrutiny, just as he has done.

Atiku pointed to Tinubu’s intervention in an American court case seeking the release of FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) records concerning him.

The former vice-president described the renewed recycling of decades-old allegations against him as “a distraction,” but said he was willing to face scrutiny.

The FBI Files Controversy

Tinubu had filed a legal challenge in a US court to block the Department of Justice, FBI and DEA from releasing his records dating back to the 1990s.

In late August, Tinubu, who had joined the case as an intervenor, asked the court to dismiss the case, arguing that some of the information was protected under privacy provisions of US law.

Atiku’s aide stressed that the Presidency admitted that the FBI and DEA have produced 399 pages of records, with portions redacted.

The Presidency has insisted that the US court will determine the release or withholding of Tinubu’s records, not Atiku.

A Pattern of Allegations

The controversy is not new. Tinubu’s legal team has maintained that the President’s records remain protected under FOIA Exemption 7(C), which shields law enforcement records from unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.

The case has generated intense public interest in Nigeria, with many calling for transparency.

This political battle is a reminder that transparency is a two-way street. Atiku is demanding that Tinubu open his records, while Tinubu is invoking privacy protections.

The same politicians who demand transparency from others will never allow their own children to be subjected to such scrutiny. Their children are protected.
