The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has dismissed claims that its airport e-hailing policies forced Uber out of the country, insisting the company’s exit was based on broader economic and regulatory considerations.

FAAN said the company had been considering its exit for some time, and that the authority’s primary responsibility was passenger safety.

Setting the Record Straight

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed claims that its airport e-hailing policies forced Uber out of the country, insisting the company’s exit was based on broader economic and regulatory considerations.

A week before Uber’s exit, FAAN temporarily stopped e-hailing drivers from conducting commercial pick-ups at its airports pending the finalisation and execution of licence agreements.

However, FAAN Managing Director Mrs Kuku rejected suggestions that the authority’s policies contributed to Uber’s decision to leave Nigeria, saying the company had been considering its exit for some time.

Passenger Safety First

Kuku explained that the agency’s primary responsibility was to ensure passenger safety, protection and a seamless experience within the airports.

She noted that while FAAN offered to allocate dedicated pick-up zones within terminal premises, the e-hailing platforms refused to assume corporate liability for individual driver conduct.

She added that FAAN’s role was limited to airport operations and that the agency did not determine the broader regulatory or commercial decisions affecting e-hailing companies across Nigeria.

Uber’s Exit: A Business Decision

Uber formally ended its 12-year presence in Nigeria on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The company cited a review of its business priorities and investment focus as the reason for the exit, which also affected its operations in Uganda.

FAAN’s clarification puts to rest speculation that its airport policies were responsible for the ride-hailing giant’s departure.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

FAAN’s clarification is a reminder that not everything is a conspiracy. Sometimes, business decisions are just business decisions.

The same politicians who blame others for every failure will never allow their own children to avoid taking responsibility. Their children are taught to own their mistakes.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: take responsibility for your actions. Not every failure is someone else’s fault. The same leaders who deflect blame will never allow their own children to escape accountability.
