Lagos — Marking more than four decades of dedicated medical stewardship, the 1984 medical graduates of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) gathered in Ikoyi, Lagos, to celebrate their 42nd reunion. While the milestone served as a joyful homecoming for professors, specialists, and health leaders, the festivities quickly pivoted into a critical assessment of Nigeria’s healthcare landscape and an urgent appeal for systemic reforms.

Sponsored by the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation and themed ‘The Medical Profession: Lifelong Service through Learning and Giving – 42 Years of Stewardship after Graduation,’ the event brought together 39 medical veterans from across Nigeria and the diaspora to evaluate the nation’s persistent health sector challenges.

Alarming Health Indices Demanding Reform

Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Olufemi Adelowo, a consultant rheumatologist, painted a stark picture of the country’s public health realities. Citing current figures, he noted that Nigeria continues to record some of the world’s poorest health outcomes, characterized by:

  • An infant mortality rate of 70 deaths per 1,000 live births
  • A neonatal mortality rate of 39 per 1,000 live births
  • A maternal mortality ratio approaching 1,000 deaths per 100,000 live births
  • An average life expectancy stagnating between 53 and 56 years

Adelowo emphasized that these statistics point directly to deep systemic vulnerabilities, compounded by widespread misconceptions that attribute medical conditions to spiritual or ancestral causes rather than treating them clinically.

The “Japa” Crisis and Infrastructure Decay

Addressing the mass migration of medical personnel—commonly referred to as the Japa syndrome—Adelowo revealed that thousands of Nigerian-trained physicians continue to practice abroad, predominantly across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Although Nigeria produces roughly 6,000 doctors annually, between 25% and 65% emigrate every year. Federal Ministry of Health estimates indicate that approximately 16,000 doctors left the country between 2019 and 2024 alone.

In addition to workforce shortages, Adelowo pointed to widespread infrastructure decay, highlighting hospitals operating without stable utilities, reliance on obsolete equipment, and a critically deficient maintenance culture. He advocated for structured, long-term maintenance agreements modeled after international standards and called for stricter regulatory oversight to crack down on unqualified practitioners, fake pharmaceuticals, and misleading social media medical advertisements.

Diverse Perspectives on Competence and Remittances

Offering an encouraging counter-perspective on the quality of local training, Dr. Ebun Bamgboye, a consultant physician and nephrologist at St. Nicholas Hospital, defended Nigerian medical education. He asserted that local graduates continue to excel internationally, driving major healthcare institutions across the UK, US, and the Middle East. Bamgboye identified economic disparities—such as the vast earnings gap between local academics and junior practitioners abroad—as the primary driver of emigration, expressing optimism that progressive economic shifts could eventually reverse the trend.

Echoing this sentiment, Program Coordinator Dr. Festus Odunayo Oshoba argued that the diaspora phenomenon also yields positive spillover effects through remittances, technological transfer, and global professional collaborations. Oshoba urged younger generations to eschew shortcuts to success, emphasizing that sustained societal development relies on integrity, rigorous training, and national investment.

The reunion concluded with personal reflections from alumni, including Prof. Adegboyega Fawole and Dr. Solomon Alabi Olaegun, who credited their formative years at UNILORIN with building the professional resilience needed to navigate decades of humanitarian service in Nigeria’s dynamic medical field.
