The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken a groundbreaking yet understated step in transforming Nigeria’s automotive landscape by establishing Africa’s first university-based automobile assembly plant. Since its inauguration in November 2022, the UNILAG–Nord Auto Assembly Plant, a partnership with indigenous automobile firm Nord Automobiles, has become a beacon of innovation, practical learning, and industrial development on the continent.
This state-of-the-art facility, located on the UNILAG campus in Lagos, is more than just an assembly line; it includes a research and development center, showroom, and after-sales workshop. It serves as a dynamic training ground where students from diverse fields—including engineering, architecture, finance, and creative arts—gain invaluable hands-on experience in vehicle and drone assembly, bridging the critical gap between academic theory and industrial practice.
Unlike projects that rely on empty promises or loud publicity stunts, UNILAG’s approach has been one of quiet, steady delivery. The initiative not only showcases Nigeria’s capacity for homegrown manufacturing excellence but also cements the university’s role as a hub for innovation and education aimed at addressing local and global industrial challenges.
The collaboration began in July 2022 when UNILAG signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with Nord Automobiles, a company led by CEO Joshua Oluwatobi Ajayi, who brought his extensive experience from the automobile industry to nurture local expertise. This partnership embodies a “Triple Elite Model,” uniting government, industry, and academia toward a common goal of national development.
The facility currently produces vehicles tailored for Nigerian conditions and also assembles drones for commercial and security applications, further expanding its technology footprint. Notably, the program offers students yearly internships, providing practical exposure across the engineering disciplines, as well as other faculties, promoting interdisciplinary learning and entrepreneurial skills crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth.
Recent visits by high-profile government officials, including the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Oduwole, who took delivery of a UNILAG-assembled official vehicle, signal strong government confidence and support for indigenous innovation and manufacturing capacity.
As UNILAG continues this quiet revolution, it sends a powerful message that Nigerian institutions can lead manufacturing innovation, transform education, and contribute significantly to the nation’s industrialization and job creation ambitions.
