NAFDAC Shuts Chinese Supermarkets, Cosmetics Shops in Abuja for Unregistered Products

NAFDAC has shut down two Chinese supermarkets in Abuja’s Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market for selling unregistered, banned, and potentially harmful products, including food items labelled only in Chinese and expired cosmetics. The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were sealed following consumer complaints and investigations that uncovered breaches of NAFDAC’s regulations requiring English labelling for Nigerian consumers..

The cosmetics shops were closed for distributing banned, expired, and unregistered skin whitening products, aphrodisiacs, body enhancement supplements, and aesthetic medicines, some prescribed by individuals falsely posing as dermatologists and pharmacists. Confiscated items valued at over ₦170 million include capsules, syrups, creams, and supplements linked to serious health risks such as kidney damage and skin cancer. NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and warned that violators of registration laws would face severe penalties. The agency also urged foreign investors to follow proper registration procedures before marketing products in Nigeria.
