Ondo State Pays Over N12 Billion in Gratuities to Local Government Retirees

In a significant move to address long-standing welfare concerns, the Ondo State Government has disbursed more than N12 billion in gratuities to local government retirees whose pensions had remained unpaid for over a decade. This milestone payment covers retirees from 2010 to 2013, reflecting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to clearing backlog arrears left by previous administrations and alleviating the financial burdens of former workers.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, disclosed the achievement during a briefing in Akure, noting that the state government prioritized savings and sound financial management, made possible through close collaboration with all 18 local government chairmen. “Though the backlog was inherited, the Governor directed us to set aside funds specifically for this purpose. We have successfully paid retirees after years of waiting, and work on 2014 retirees’ payments will commence soon,” Takuro stated.

Local Government Chairs Praised for Development Efforts and Transparency

Takuro commended the local government chairmen for their dedication to grassroots development, transparency, and prudent savings initiatives. The councils have collectively saved N15 billion in a joint account, earmarked for capital projects beyond routine expenditure. These funds have supported projects such as market construction, rural road grading, solar power installations, potable water supply, and youth employment in agriculture.

The commissioner underscored that these efforts are aligned with the shared vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Aiyedatiwa, emphasizing that sustainable grassroots empowerment is foundational to broader national progress. “Supporting rural communities is critical to preventing excessive urban migration and strengthening food security,” he explained.

Strengthening Accountability and Governance at the Local Level

To reinforce transparency and proper fund management, the state government has partnered with anti-corruption agencies including the EFCC and ICPC to train local government officials and chairmen. These programs aim to instill the highest standards of accountability, ensuring that all allocated funds are used effectively for community benefits.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration continues to prioritize retirees’ welfare and grassroots development concurrently, recognizing that robust local governance structures are essential for the state’s overall stability and growth.
