The United Kingdom rejected at least 1,344,595 visa applications from Nigerian nationals between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026, newly released official data reveals.

The figures, compiled from the UK Home Office’s immigration statistics, place Nigeria second globally in total visa refusals, trailing only India. Within Africa, Nigeria stands out sharply, accounting for 44.4% of all UK visa rejections across the continent during this 21-year period.

High Stakes, High Rejections

Despite the high volume of refusals, Nigeria remains one of the UK’s primary sources of international travel. Over the same two decades, the UK granted 2,723,558 visas to Nigerians, making the country the third-highest recipient globally, behind India and China, and the absolute highest in Africa.

However, Nigeria’s cumulative refusal rate of 33.1% is more than double the UK’s global rejection average of 14.8%. The data highlights a steep disproportion: while Nigerian applicants submitted just 6.8% of global applications, they received roughly one in every seven worldwide rejections.

  • Visitor Visas: The primary driver of denials, accounting for 1,127,088 (83.8%) of total Nigerian refusals, with a 37.1% rejection rate.
  • Study Visas: 130,712 refusals (20.5% rejection rate).
  • Work Visas: 41,410 refusals (16% rejection rate).
  • Family Visas: 12,217 refusals.

Policy Shifts Chill the ‘Japa’ Surge

The historical data reflects economic and policy shifts in both nations. Rejections peaked in the mid-2000s, hitting an all-time high of 49.6% in 2006. Conversely, the post-pandemic boom of 2023 saw refusals drop to a recent low of 21%, concurrent with a record-breaking 281,658 visa grants as Nigerians increasingly sought the “Japa” route to escape domestic economic stagnation.

This upward trend abruptly reversed following aggressive legal migration curbs introduced by the UK government. In April 2024, the UK hiked the minimum salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas by 48%—from £26,200 to £38,700—and barred international students and care workers from bringing family dependents.

Consequently, Nigerian work visa applications plummeted by approximately 68% in 2024. Rejection rates pushed back up to 33.5% in 2024 and 33.1% in 2025, climbing further to 35.4% in the first quarter of 2026.

The Continental View

Nigeria easily tops the African continent in total volume, though some neighboring nations face higher percentage-based barriers:

  • Nigeria: 1,344,595 refusals (33.1% rate)
  • Ghana: 374,108 refusals (40.5% rate)
  • Algeria: 191,903 refusals (41.7% rate)
  • Egypt: 134,055 refusals (16.2% rate)
  • South Africa: 61,521 refusals (3.6% rate)

Scrutiny and Asylum Ties

The stringent oversight applied to Nigerian applicants is partly attributed to post-entry behavior. The Home Office noted that in the year ending September 2025, Nigeria ranked among the top five nationalities filing asylum claims after initially entering the UK on a valid, temporary visa. This pattern has prompted immigration officials to tighten scrutiny on financial solvency and home-country ties, viewing applicants through a high-emigration risk lens.

Commenting on the development, former Nigerian Ambassador to Singapore, Ogbole Amedu-Ode, emphasized that the underlying driver remains economic.

”The economic doldrums have pushed compatriots into Japa mode,” Amedu-Ode stated, adding that the trend is unlikely to cool until Nigeria’s macroeconomic performance improves. He noted, however, that the massive volume of total applications naturally inflates both the high approval and rejection figures simultaneously.
