Tragic End: UK Returnee Kidnapped, Murdered in Delta

​ASABA, NIGERIA — Security concerns surrounding diaspora returns have been thrown into sharp focus once again following the tragic abduction and murder of a 44-year-old United Kingdom-bound Nigerian, Samson Onotakaroma Agidotan, in Delta State.

​The deceased, who had recently traveled back to Nigeria to reunite with his immediate family, was brutally slain by his captors after being intercepted in January. His remains were recently laid to rest amid tears and tributes in his hometown of Okpanam, near Asaba.

​A Journey Ended in Tragedy

​According to family sources, Mr. Agidotan arrived in the country late last year and was journeying within Delta State when he was ambushed and taken hostage by unidentified gunmen on January 24, 2026.

​Despite hopes for his safe release, the search ended in heartbreak nearly three weeks later. On February 17, 2026, local authorities discovered his lifeless body dumped in a bush area on the outskirts of Asaba, the Delta State capital. Following extensive forensic and administrative delays, his final interment took place on Friday, May 22, 2026.

​The grim reality of Agidotan’s demise has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, where he was highly regarded. Many close associates only learned of the tragedy recently, after his widow began reaching out to contacts stored on a mobile device he had previously gifted to his daughter.

​Comrade Omoike Erewele, a close UK-based friend of the deceased, expressed his profound grief over the incident, describing Agidotan as an exceptionally peace-loving and industrious individual.

​”Life is truly unpredictable,” Erewele shared in a poignant tribute. “I had tried calling his UK number some days ago, but it was switched off, which was unusual. When his wife contacted me and sent his obituary, I was completely speechless. He was honestly one of the best people I met in the UK—humble, kind, peaceful, and full of life.”

​Escalating Diaspora Insecurity

​The murder of Mr. Agidotan adds to a worrisome trend of targeted violence and abductions involving Nigerians visiting from the diaspora. Security analysts have frequently warned that returnees are often viewed as high-value targets by criminal syndicates operating in the southern and western regions of the country.

​While local police commands continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and subsequent murder, no definitive arrests have been publicly announced.

​The late 44-year-old leaves behind a wife, a young daughter, and an extended family now grappling with an irreplaceable loss.
