Chicago, USA – A new legal challenge has emerged against Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a U.S. law firm, Options Law Group, P.C., based in Chicago, prepares a significant lawsuit to compel Chicago State University (CSU) to revoke the diploma it awarded to Mr. Tinubu in 1979. This action, spearheaded by the Abuja-based Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy, marks a renewed effort to question the academic qualification that has long been a subject of controversy surrounding the Nigerian leader.
The law firm asserts that the 1979 diploma was procured through “egregious forgery,” citing established falsification of high school records submitted by Mr. Tinubu for his enrollment at the Illinois institution. According to sources within Options Law Group, P.C., this “thermonuclear lawsuit” comes after CSU administrators allegedly ignored several demand letters sent between March and April 2025, pressing the university to disavow the certificate given the findings of falsified admission documents.
An April 1, 2025, missive from Options Law Group, P.C., warned CSU of impending legal proceedings under state and federal laws if the university failed to respond within fourteen days. Copies of this warning were reportedly sent to various authorities, including the Illinois Attorney-General’s office. The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy, the client behind this legal push, stated in a separate letter to Illinois Attorney-General Kwame Raoul that “Our client has presented facts which a reasonable person can conclude that Bola A. Tinubu, a former student of the Chicago State University, class of 1979, misrepresented material and misleading facts on admission application to CSU in 1977.”
This latest legal offensive reopens a chapter of academic scrutiny that has persistently trailed President Tinubu’s political career. Previous challenges, notably during the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, involved extensive legal battles and depositions seeking to verify his academic records from CSU. During these past proceedings, CSU officials confirmed Mr. Tinubu’s attendance and graduation in 1979 with a degree in business and administration. However, questions arose regarding discrepancies in different versions of the certificate, including varying dates, signatures, and typographical elements.
While CSU had previously affirmed issuing a degree to Mr. Tinubu, the university also stated it could not definitively authenticate whether the certificate he submitted to Nigeria’s electoral body (INEC) matched the one issued upon his graduation. Some of these discrepancies were attributed by Mr. Tinubu’s legal team to “clerical errors” made by CSU clerks, particularly concerning the graduation date and changes in the university’s logo and signatory over time.
This new legal confrontation by Options Law Group, P.C., on behalf of the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy, is poised to bring renewed focus on President Tinubu’s educational background, potentially influencing political narratives ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
