In a historic and decisive move late Friday, the United States Congress approved a resolution granting President Donald J. Trump the authority to initiate targeted military operations in Nigeria. The vote, held during a special joint session, concluded with a strong majority of 285 out of 383 members backing the measure, reflecting bipartisan concern over escalating violence against Christian communities in northern and central Nigeria.

The resolution, known as the Nigeria Religious Freedom Protection and Counter-Terrorism Act of 2025, empowers the President to take swift, focused military action against armed insurgent groups responsible for a decade-long campaign of terror, including Boko Haram and heavily armed Fulani militias. These groups have been implicated in widespread attacks such as village burnings, abductions, and killings that have made Nigeria the deadliest country globally for Christians.

President Trump celebrated the congressional endorsement on his social platform, declaring the vote a “HUGE WIN” and pledging rapid military intervention to halt what he characterized as “genocide against Christians.” He stated, “The military is ready. Very soon, justice will be done – fast and hard.”

This resolution followed a period of significant U.S. pressure on Nigeria for failing to halt the religiously motivated violence. Measures preceding the vote included the designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom violations and a freeze on over $1 billion in U.S. aid until visible improvements are made. Additionally, the Pentagon has been tasked to prepare detailed contingency plans for possible airstrikes and special-forces missions.

While welcomed by evangelical leaders and human rights advocates in the U.S. as a long-overdue step, the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu condemned the vote as an unwarranted interference in Nigeria’s internal security affairs, highlighting that the conflict affects Nigerians of various faiths. Some African and European governments have also voiced concerns that unilateral U.S. military action might destabilize the wider West African region.

The U.S. administration’s approach seeks precision strikes and targeted counterterrorism efforts rather than a large-scale troop deployment. Analysts expect initial operations to focus on dismantling terrorist strongholds through intelligence-led actions intended to curtail the brutal insurgencies.

For millions of persecuted Nigerians, especially Christians caught in the crossfire of extremist violence, the congressional vote represents a beacon of hope amid years of suffering. It also signals a robust message from Washington that protecting vulnerable religious communities worldwide remains a pivotal element of U.S. foreign policy under President Trump.
