ABUJA — In a swift leadership transition at Force Headquarters, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Ridwan Disu has officially assumed office as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police (Acting).
The transition follows the sudden resignation of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun (Rtd), who stepped down on February 24, citing “pressing family considerations.” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while decorating Disu at the State House on Wednesday, tasked the new police chief with a clear mandate: restore public confidence and crush the security challenges threatening the nation’s peace.
A Career Defined by ‘The Good Guys’ Philosophy
Affectionately known as “Tunji Disu,” the new IGP is no stranger to high-stakes policing. He is perhaps most celebrated for his transformative tenure as the Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021. There, he rebranded his officers as “The Good Guys,” championing a model of community-oriented policing that prioritized civility and medical assistance during crises, notably during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

His operational pedigree is equally formidable. Disu was a central figure in the intelligence-led operation that brought down the notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (Evans). He later took the helm of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in 2021, succeeding the suspended Abba Kyari, where he focused on modernizing the unit’s investigative techniques.
The Scholar and the Judoka
Born on April 13, 1966, on Lagos Island, Disu is one of the most academically decorated officers to ever lead the Force. His credentials span from a B.A. in English (Education) to multiple Master’s degrees in Public Administration, Criminology, and Entrepreneurship.
Beyond the boardroom and the battlefield, Disu is an elite athlete. A third-dan black belt in Judo, he won two gold medals at the 1990 National Sports Festival and, more recently, a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships in Massachusetts.

A Critical Roadmap
Upon assuming duty, Ag. IGP Disu reassured the public of his commitment to the “Renewed Hope” security agenda. His immediate priorities include:
- Consolidating Reforms: Building on the modernization efforts started by his predecessor.
- Community Partnership: Strengthening the bond between the police and the citizenry to improve intelligence gathering.
- Internal Security: Intensifying the crackdown on kidnapping, banditry, and violent crime across the federation.
As Disu takes the baton, the nation watches with high expectations. The Nigeria Police Council is expected to meet next week to ratify his appointment before it is transmitted to the Senate for final confirmation.
