South African Woman Handed Three Life Terms for Triple Burial Horrors

​PRETORIA – In a case that has shocked the nation to its core, Pamela Ncumisa Selani has been sentenced to three life terms for the cold-blooded murders of her two lovers and her teenage son, all of whom were buried in a single, shallow grave in her own backyard.

​The gruesome details emerged during a trial that painted Selani not just as a woman seeking revenge or protection, but as a calculated killer who turned her home into a private cemetery. The court heard how she manipulated her victims into becoming accomplices before eventually turning on them.

​A Timeline of Terror

​The spree began in 2016 when Selani discovered she was HIV positive. Blaming her Malawian boyfriend, known as Tshangisa, she recruited her other partner, a Zimbabwean national named Gift, to help her eliminate him. Gift reportedly bludgeoned the victim with a hammer; Selani then watched as he was buried behind her house.

​By 2017, the alliance soured. Selani claimed Gift had become abusive. In a twisted repeat of her previous tactic, she convinced her then 16-year-old son to help her murder Gift. After poisoning his food and suffocating him, they buried Gift directly on top of the first victim.

​The final horror occurred in 2018. Selani’s son, who had helped her kill Gift, began struggling with drug addiction. He allegedly used his knowledge of the “backyard graveyard” to blackmail his mother for money. Fearing exposure, Selani struck her own child with a brick, killing him instantly before burying him atop the two men.

​The Final Discovery

​The “house of horrors” finally gave up its secrets when Selani’s other child, traumatized by the events, sought help from a traditional healer, which eventually led to a police intervention. Investigators also noted that Selani had killed the family dog after it wouldn’t stop sniffing around the burial site.

​Justice Mosopa, in delivering the sentence in July 2024, described the murders as “callous and heinous,” noting that each victim died a “degrading” death at the hands of someone they should have been able to trust.
