WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind embattled FIFA president Gianni Infantino, describing any move to remove him from office as a “terrible mistake” and reigniting long-standing concerns within world football that the American leader has grown unusually close to, and unusually involved in, the running of the sport’s governing body.

Trump made the declaration in a post on Truth Social on Monday night, August 10, 2026, his first public defence of Infantino since a leaked plan to partially privatise FIFA’s commercial operations plunged the FIFA presidency into its most serious internal crisis in years.

What Trump Said

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show that Trump described Infantino as “fantastic” and credited him with presiding over what he called the most successful World Cup ever staged, warning that FIFA would “never be as successful or profitable again” without him at the helm.

The remarks came weeks after Trump attended the World Cup final alongside Infantino in New Jersey last month, an appearance that has since become a reference point for critics who argue the FIFA president has allowed a head of state unusually close proximity to football’s governing body.

The Crisis Trump Is Wading Into

ValidViewNetwork reports that Infantino’s authority came under direct challenge on Monday when three of football’s most powerful confederations, UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, issued a joint open letter accusing him of breaking trust with member federations “through deception.”

The letter followed the collapse of Infantino’s FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, a scheme leaked on July 28 that would have created a separate company to manage commercial and ticketing rights across FIFA competitions, including future World Cups, with roughly a fifth of that company sold to private investors.

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm that UEFA, whose membership includes five of the last six men’s World Cup winning nations, is now leading calls for Infantino’s exit and has floated the possibility of boycotting FIFA tournaments if he remains in charge, a threat that would place the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil directly in the line of fire as the first major tournament likely to be affected.

Backstory: Trump’s Pattern Of Football Meddling

This is not the first time Trump has inserted himself into matters ordinarily left to football administrators. ValidViewNetwork gathered that during the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, Trump publicly disclosed that he had personally called Infantino to request a review of a suspension handed to American striker Folarin Balogun, in a bid to have the decision overturned before the last-16 tie against Belgium.

The intervention did not save the United States, who lost that game 4-1, but it left a lasting impression on football stakeholders already uneasy about how closely the American president had positioned himself to FIFA’s decision-making.

That closeness was formalised months earlier when Infantino awarded Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the World Cup draw ceremony in December 2025, a decision that drew sharp criticism at the time from football administrators and commentators who accused Infantino of politicising an institution meant to remain above partisan affairs.

The award has resurfaced repeatedly in the current dispute, with critics pointing to it as an early sign of the same instinct now blamed for the FFE fallout, a FIFA presidency more attentive to powerful allies than to the confederations it is meant to serve.

Why Football Insiders Are Worried

Findings from ValidViewNetwork indicate that the unease within FIFA’s ranks is no longer only about the failed privatisation scheme, but about a broader pattern in which Infantino’s personal relationships, particularly with Trump, appear to shape decisions that should ordinarily run through football’s institutional channels.

The joint letter from UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC captured this directly, stating that leadership in football “is not a possession” and cannot be held above the collective that grants it, language widely read within football circles as a rebuke of a presidency seen as increasingly personalised and politically entangled.

What Happens Next

Infantino, who is expected to seek a fourth and final term at the FIFA Congress in March 2027, had looked set to run unopposed before the FFE plans were exposed.

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is now being widely discussed as a possible challenger, with candidates required to formally declare by November 18, 2026.

Whether Trump’s public backing strengthens or further complicates Infantino’s position remains to be seen, but it has already added a new, distinctly political layer to a contest football’s own confederations had hoped to settle on institutional terms.
