Electricity transformers and substations designated for the $2.3bn Siemens power project have arrived in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone for the initiative, according to Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

The minister highlighted that progress on the project was previously hindered by challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and the unfortunate passing of the late Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, who played a pivotal role in championing the project.

Speaking at a briefing, Adelabu explained that the Siemens contract, part of the presidential power initiatives, was signed with the German government in 2018 to revamp Nigeria’s power transmission and distribution sector.

However, substantial progress was impeded by the pandemic and subsequent leadership transitions until President Bola Tinubu’s administration took charge.

Adelabu outlined the recent advancements, noting that the project is proceeding in phases, with significant progress achieved during the pilot phase under the Tinubu government.

He mentioned key developments, including discussions during the visit of the German Chancellor to Nigeria and subsequent agreements signed at COP 28 in Dubai.

The minister disclosed that ten power transformers and ten mobile substations have been imported for the project’s pilot phase, with installations already underway across the country.

Notably, five transformers and three mobile substations have been installed, with plans to commission and energize them soon.

Adelabu outlined the upcoming phases of the project, which entail enhancing the transmission network by expanding capacity and strengthening infrastructure to prevent grid collapses.

This involves upgrading existing substations and establishing new ones, alongside significant expansions and upgrades to transmission and distribution lines.

In conclusion, the minister expressed confidence that these initiatives, part of the Siemens projects under the presidential power initiatives, would lead to tangible improvements in Nigeria’s national grid’s reliability and the efficiency of distribution companies.

He emphasized President Tinubu’s strong commitment to realizing these transformative projects.
