TMT Travels Boss Paraded As Victims Count Losses in Multi-Million Naira Visa Scam

​The dream of relocating abroad turned into an absolute nightmare for hundreds of unsuspecting Nigerians following the high-profile arrest of Ifeanyi Onukwubiri, the Chief Executive Officer of TMT Travels and Tours. Popularly known as TMT, the controversial travel agent was paraded before aggrieved victims who accused him of running an industrial-scale visa scam running into hundreds of millions of naira.

​The operation, which many have rebaptized a “Travel Money Trap”, left countless families shattered. For upwards of two years, numerous applicants found themselves trapped in limbo, stripped of their international passports, denied refunds, and ghosted by a man they trusted with their life savings.

One distraught woman recounted how her husband tragically lost his life to a stress-induced heart attack, allegedly brought on by the devastating financial ruin and unending frustration inflicted by Onukwubiri’s empty travel promises.

​In another heartbreaking account, a Nigerian woman who returned all the way from Libya hoping to secure legitimate documentation for her family fell victim to the syndicate. Instead of processing their papers, Onukwubiri allegedly misappropriated their hard-earned funds to lavishly celebrate his dog’s birthday—a detail that has sparked intense nationwide outrage on social media.

​Victims numbering in their scores, armed with placards and petitions, stormed authorities detailing how they were defrauded of sums ranging from millions of naira under the guise of procuring work and study visas for Canada, Japan, and European countries. Many also fell prey to fabricated COVID-19 test mandates designed to squeeze extra cash from desperate applicants.

​Operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) subsequently moved Onukwubiri from Owerri, Imo State, to Abuja following mounting pressure and petitions backed by public activist campaigns. While police investigations deepen to recover seized travel documents and audit the extent of the multi-million-naira fraud, victims continue to demand full financial restitution and unsparing prosecution.
