Lightning Kills Police Inspector on Duty

MAIDUGURI – The Borno State Police Command is in mourning following the tragic death of Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, a dedicated officer who lost his life to a lightning strike while performing his official duties in the state capital.

​The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, at approximately 2:19 p.m. Inspector Garba, affectionately known by colleagues and residents as “Buratai,” was coordinating vehicle parking opposite the State Police Command headquarters when the elements turned deadly.

​According to a tribute released on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, Garba was working alongside a senior colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu, when a sudden storm moved into the area.

​“As strong winds began to gather, both officers reportedly attempted to seek shelter before the rain started,” Daso stated. “But in a sudden and devastating moment, a loud thunderclap echoed through the atmosphere, followed instantly by a powerful lightning strike that hit both officers.”

​While ASP Adamu survived the strike in what has been described as a “miraculous” escape, Inspector Garba bore the full force of the discharge. He sustained partial burns and was confirmed dead shortly after.

​The spokesperson described the late Inspector as a symbol of tireless dedication who was often seen standing under the scorching sun to maintain order.

​“He lost his life, not to violence or conflict, but to the force of the storm,” Daso remarked. “Inspector Abdulkadir Garba was more than a police officer to many; he was a familiar face, a hardworking officer, and a symbol of dedication to service.”

​The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the Maiduguri community, where Garba was well-regarded for his commitment to public safety. Colleagues remember him as an officer who never shied away from the uncertainties of outdoor duty, regardless of the weather.

​The Command noted that the tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life.

​“One moment, duty calls. The next moment, eternity answers,” the statement concluded.
