The Language of Impunity: What a Senator’s “Metaphor” Tells Us About Osun’s Fragile Peace

OSOGBO — Four days before Osun State votes for a new governor, the loudest issue on the campaign trail is no longer a manifesto. It is a single word, spoken twice in one week and defended, then disowned, by the same man: kill.

The word belongs to Senator Francis Ade Fadahunsi, a retired Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service who represents Osun East in the National Assembly.

In a video that began circulating this week and was amplified nationally after Afrobeats star Davido shared it, Fadahunsi is heard addressing a crowd in Ilesa in Yoruba, telling them that any Accord Party member spotted in the area before Saturday’s election should be killed.

He did not lower his voice for the cameras. Findings show he went further, challenging anyone recording him to post the clip online, a dare, not a slip of the tongue.

A recantation, not a retraction

By Tuesday, as outrage spread and Governor Ademola Adeleke publicly called for his arrest, Fadahunsi’s media office issued a statement titled “Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence, Senator Fadahunsi Tells APC.”

The senator now insists the comment was “purely political and metaphorical,” a call for supporters to defeat Accord “with your votes,” and that he has never at any point advocated violence, intimidation, or physical attack against members of any party.

Checks by ValidViewNetwork show this defence sits uneasily against the week’s timeline. The Nation reports that twelve APC supporters were killed in Ilesa within twenty-four hours, five shot during a weekend rally, seven more on Tuesday at Igbogi, allegedly by suspected political thugs.

APC members have since taken to the streets of Ilesa in protest. Whatever Fadahunsi intended by his choice of word, it landed inside a town already burying its own.

Why the word matters more than the man

This is not, at its core, a story about one senator’s temper. It is a story about what happens when the powerful speak carelessly to the powerless. The senator will survive this news cycle with lawyers, a media office and a “clarification.”

The artisan, the trader, the government worker on suspension without pay, the jobless graduate, the miscreant with nothing left to lose, the people actually standing in that crowd in Ilesa, do not have that luxury.

They hear “kill,” not “vote.”

History and literature both offer blunt warnings about what happens next.

Three warnings history keeps repeating

1.Rwanda, 1994—The genocide against the Tutsi did not begin with machetes; it began with language. For months before the killing started, radio broadcasts on Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines urged listeners to “cut down the tall trees” and “clear the bush” ,coded, almost pastoral phrases that ordinary Rwandans came to understand as instructions to kill their Tutsi neighbours.

By the time the machetes came out, the words had already done the work of turning “the other party” into “not fully human.” Roughly 800,000 people were killed in about a hundred days, many by people who had lived beside their victims for years.

The lesson for Osun is not that Nigeria is Rwanda; it is that mass violence is rarely spontaneous, it is usually rehearsed first in speech, at rallies and on radio, long before it reaches the street.

2.Wetiè, Western Nigeria, 1962–1965 — Closer to home, the political crisis in the old Western Region, remembered locally as “Wetiè,” Yoruba for “pour fuel” , grew out of a bitter split inside the Action Group and a disputed regional election.

Political thuggery escalated into arson; opponents’ houses, cars and property were doused in petrol and set alight, sometimes with people still inside.

The disorder that followed gave the military part of its justification for Nigeria’s first coup in January 1966, which ended the First Republic.

Wetiè is the country’s own case study in how unchecked partisan violence, once normalised, can consume the very system the politicians were fighting to control.

3. T.M. Aluko’s “Chief the Honourable Minister” (1970)— In this satirical novel, Alade Moses, an honest, well-meaning schoolmaster from the fictional town of Newtown is abruptly summoned home from a British Council trip and made Minister of Works in the newly independent state of “Afromacoland.”

He wants to serve his country well, but he is steadily pulled under by party intrigue, patronage-hungry colleagues and the machinery of electoral ambition around him, and the novel ends in corruption and tragedy for both the man and his country.

Aluko, writing barely a decade after Nigeria’s independence, was not describing one bad politician; he was describing a system in which decent intentions are no match for a political culture built on winning at any cost.

Six decades later, Osun’s campaign trail is testing the same thesis.

The politics behind the politics

Osun’s current tension did not begin this week. Since Governor Adeleke unseated Adegboyega Oyetola in 2022, persistent (and so far unproven) claims within APC circles allege that Oyetola has never made peace with that defeat and has been working, with federal backing, to reclaim the state by proxy. What is verifiable is the atmosphere it has helped produce; a governorship race in which senior party figures feel emboldened to threaten opponents from a public platform, confident that a same-week apology will be enough to move on.

The test of leadership

A leader’s real character is not measured by age, title or how convincingly his media office can rewrite a sentence after the fact.

It is measured by what he says before he knows the cameras are recording, and by whether he is willing to own it afterward rather than reach for a dictionary.

Nigeria has had this argument before, in Rwanda’s shadow, in Wetiè’s ashes, in the fiction that tried to warn us. It should not need to have it again in Osun.

Institutional response

Governor Adeleke has publicly demanded Fadahunsi’s arrest. Security agencies have not, as of this report, confirmed any charge against the senator, and his supporters maintain his remarks were rhetorical.

The Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies are under mounting pressure to guarantee a peaceful process on Saturday, including protection for voters “with or without a yellow cap.”
