The Death of a Legend

The news broke on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, had passed away at the age of 66 after a brave battle with stage-four cancer. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced his death during an Instagram Live session.

The news sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond.Ogogo’s death came just days after his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had appealed for medical assistance for their father, who had been battling stage-four cancer.

Doctors had reportedly informed the family that they could no longer administer chemotherapy because of his condition, prompting the family to seek alternative treatment options.

The Burial: A Final Farewell in Ilaro

On Monday, August 24, 2026, Ogogo was laid to rest in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The funeral prayer took place at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground in Ilaro.

His remains had arrived in Ilaro the previous day, Sunday.

The burial was attended by a who’s who of the Yoruba film industry.

Among those present were:·

Yinka Quadri — Ogogo’s best friend, who broke down in tears as his remains were carried away

·Jide Kosoko — who announced the actor’s death on Instagram

· Femi Adebayo — who broke down in tears while paying tribute

· Mr Latin (Bolaji Amusan) — President of TAMPAN

· Faithia Balogun, Kolawole Ajeyemi, Ireti Osayemi, Toyosi Adesanya, Madam Saje, Dele Odule, Olaiya Igwe, and other colleagues

The actor’s wife was seen weeping as he was laid to rest, a poignant moment that captured the grief of a family losing its patriarch.

Political Leaders and Cultural Icons Pay Tribute

In the days following Ogogo’s death, tributes poured in from across the political and cultural spectrum.

President Bola Tinubu mourned Ogogo, describing his passing as a “major loss” to Nigeria’s creative industry and cultural heritage.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said the actor’s death had created a “painful void” in Nigeria’s creative community.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu sent a delegation led by his Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde, to condole with the family.

Ayinde described Ogogo as “a cultural icon whose career helped project Yoruba identity, language and values to a wider audience” and prayed that God would “grant the deceased eternal rest and give strength and comfort to his widow, children and the wider family.”

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also paid tribute to the late actor.

Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, visited Ogogo’s family in Lagos, conveying President Tinubu’s “deep condolences and heartfelt greetings” on behalf of the Federal Government and the Nigerian people.

She described Ogogo’s passing as a “great loss to his family, colleagues, fans and the wider Nigerian creative community” and affirmed that his “remarkable contribution to Nollywood and his dedication to the Nigerian arts will remain an important part of our creative heritage.”

Joke Silva, veteran actress, paid tribute on Instagram, describing Ogogo as having “the soul of a philosopher.” She wrote:

“Watching him, you could tell this wasn’t just a job to him. He approached every role like a question worth sitting with, and answered it with care instead of showmanship. That’s rare in a business built on performance. He had the soul of a philosopher, using character to look honestly at life, and letting the rest of us look with him”.

Yinka Quadri, Ogogo’s closest friend for over four decades, wrote a deeply emotional tribute describing their bond as that of “twins from heaven, born to different mothers.” He recounted their final moments together at the hospital, when Ogogo comforted him with the words: “Yinka, don’t cry. Nothing bad will happen to me.”

Dele Odule also penned an emotional tribute, saying: “Your departure has left a space that cannot be filled. Even the whole world knows that we didn’t just lose our colleague. We lost a brother.”

Abbey Lanre wrote:

“Accepting that I must say goodbye to you has been incredibly difficult. Very, very difficult. However, death is inevitable. Tayelolu ejire ara isokun, thank you for all the good and challenging times we shared. Thank you for being a loyal and dependable friend, confidant, and brother for so many decades.”

Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) broke down in tears on stage while performing after receiving news of the actor’s death.

Today, Monday, August 31, 2026, the family and colleagues of the late Ogogo are gathering at the Stadium in Ilaro, Ogun State, for his eighth-day Fidau prayer.

Videos shared via social media show guests arriving in numbers for the solemn ceremony. Among the Nollywood personalities in attendance are:

· Yinka Quadri — visibly emotional, his eyes swollen from grief, welcoming Ogogo’s children as they arrived

· Jide Kosoko

· Odunlade Adekola

The deceased’s daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, are also present at the event.

When Kira Taiwo walked into the ceremony, the officiating clerics spotted her and paused to formally welcome her, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by those present.

Yinka Quadri is seen welcoming Ogogo’s children as they arrive, his grief written plainly across his face. His eyes are visibly swollen, giving the impression that he has barely stopped crying since news of his friend’s passing broke.

POINT OF CORRECTION: CLARIFICATION ON OGOGO’S N25 MILLION

Amid the mourning, a misunderstanding emerged regarding the N25 million Ogogo reportedly sent before his passing.

ValidViewNetwork has gathered that the Chief Imam has clarified the funds were not intended for the construction of a mosque, as some had suggested, but rather for the renovation of Ogogo’s family house.

This morning, just before the Fidau prayer, the Chief Imam of the mosque reportedly handed over the money to the family, in line with the family’s clarification. The act of returning the funds was seen as a demonstration of integrity and respect for the late actor’s true intentions.

The family has called on members of the public to refrain from sharing unverified information and to respect the family’s statement.

The family’s statement concluded with a heartfelt prayer: “May Allah forgive Ogogo, show him mercy, accept his good deeds, and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.”

A Life Worth Celebrating

Ogogo’s career spanned more than four decades, during which he featured in hundreds of films and became one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba cinema.

He worked as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter, contributing to stories rooted in Yoruba culture, family life, leadership, tradition and social responsibility.

His iconic line “Na all of us go chop breakfast” became embedded in Nigerian pop culture. His best friend, Yinka Quadri, once said he had never loved a friend like he loved Ogogo. Their friendship, spanning decades, was a testament to the kind of man Ogogo was—loyal, humble, and deeply committed to his craft and his people.
