SOKOTO — At three years old, Ibrahim Dalhatu contracted a disease that would change his face, his childhood and eventually the course of his life.

The disease was noma.

Now eight, Ibrahim has undergone six reconstructive operations after the infection destroyed parts of his face. His story is not an isolated one.

Noma remains one of the most devastating diseases affecting severely malnourished children, particularly in impoverished communities across Africa.

It often begins quietly with inflammation around the gums. Then it can move rapidly.

Without early treatment, the infection can destroy tissue and bone around the mouth and face. Children who survive the disease may be left with severe facial disfigurement, difficulty eating and speaking, and lifelong psychological and social consequences.

Nigeria remains one of the countries most affected by noma.

At the Noma Children Hospital in Sokoto, medical teams continue to treat children whose families often arrive only after the disease has caused extensive damage.

The fight is therefore not limited to surgery.

Early diagnosis matters. Nutrition matters. Clean water, sanitation and access to basic healthcare matter.

Poverty matters.

When these protections fail simultaneously, a relatively preventable infection can become a life-threatening catastrophe.

Free reconstructive surgery is giving some survivors another opportunity.

Medical teams have carried out hundreds of procedures on children affected by the disease, including complex operations designed to restore damaged facial structures.

But surgery cannot solve the conditions that allowed noma to take hold.

That is the deeper Nigerian story. A child should not have to lose part of a face before a health system discovers that the child is severely malnourished and medically vulnerable.

For Ibrahim and other survivors, reconstructive surgery offers hope.

For thousands of children living in similar conditions, prevention remains the greater victory. Noma has often been described as a neglected disease. In Nigeria, the faces of its survivors show what that neglect can cost. ValidViewNetwork reports.
