South Africa’s ostrich industry is facing renewed scrutiny after an animal-welfare investigation alleged that live birds are subjected to mechanical feather removal for products destined for the fashion industry.

The investigation alleges that workers corner ostriches, cover their heads and remove feathers by cutting or pulling them without pain relief.

It also alleges that some feathers are cut above the bloodline while they are still growing before being pulled from the birds’ skin.

The investigators have described such feathers as “blood feathers”.

The allegations are significant because South Africa accounts for about 75 per cent of the global ostrich market.
