BELFAST — In a case that has profoundly chilled Northern Ireland, a 36-year-old YouTuber who broadcast a pre-recorded video gaming session to construct a false alibi while murdering his pregnant partner has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Stephen McCullagh, of Woodland Gardens in Lisburn, showed no emotion as Mr. Justice Patrick Kinney ordered him to serve a minimum of 31 years behind bars. The sentencing at Belfast Crown Court concludes a harrowing legal saga that exposed a web of “remorseless” premeditation and digital deception.

A Calculated and Frenzied Attack

In March, a jury unanimously found McCullagh guilty of the December 2022 murder of 32-year-old Natalie McNally. Ms. McNally was 15 weeks pregnant with their unborn son, whom the family named Dean, when she was targeted in her own home in Silverwood Green, Lurgan.

The court heard details of a “frenzied” and exceptionally violent assault. McCullagh stabbed, strangled, and bludgeoned McNally, inflicting severe facial fractures and broken neck bones.

”You planned this murder in remorseless detail,” Justice Kinney said during sentencing. “Despite that frenzy, the killing was cold-blooded and calculated.”

The judge added that he was satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that McCullagh had placed McNally’s face into a dog bowl after the attack to further punish and humiliate her.

The ‘Elaborate Charade’

The defining element of the prosecution’s case was McCullagh’s sophisticated use of technology to evade justice. While the murder was taking place, a six-hour stream of McCullagh playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City broadcasted live on his YouTube channel.

Donning a Santa hat, drinking Guinness, and exchanging jokes with online viewers, McCullagh dropped phrases like, “I am not leaving the house tonight,” to reinforce the illusion that he was at home 17 miles away.

The broadcast was actually recorded four nights earlier and scheduled to simulate a live event.

”I’ve never seen a case like this in terms of domestic murder with such a level of premeditation,” said Catherine Kierans, Head of the Public Prosecution Service Serious Crime Unit. She branded the digital alibi an “elaborate charade.”

Deception and Espionage

The deception extended long after the crime. After leaving the scene, McCullagh returned to the house 24 hours later, staged the discovery of the body, and called emergency services. To divert suspicion, he actively framed an innocent ex-partner of McNally’s, claiming the man had been harassing her.

McCullagh then embedded himself within the grieving McNally family. He attended Natalie’s wake on Christmas Day, where her relatives comforted him, even allowing him extensive, private time by her coffin.

In a move described by the prosecution as “insidious,” McCullagh later deliberately left his mobile phone at the McNally family home. He returned for it later under the guise of forgetting it, but the device had been set to secretly record audio to determine if the family suspected his involvement.

The breakthrough came when a meticulous, large-scale investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) proved the livestream was pre-recorded. Analysis of CCTV footage, taxi receipts, and mobile data eventually shattered his alibi.

A Family’s Dignity Amid ‘Unimaginable Pain’

Outside the court, Natalie’s father, Noel McNally, spoke of the family’s enduring heartache.

”Today is not a celebration of the sentence handed down, as Bernadette, my boys, and myself are serving a life sentence since the murder of our beloved Natalie,” he said. “But hopefully it will serve as a deterrent to help stop violence against women and girls in this country.”

Senior police and prosecution officials praised the McNally family for their immense dignity throughout the harrowing five-week trial. They reiterated that tackling domestic abuse and violence against women remains an urgent, top priority across the region.
