ST ALBANS – A Hertfordshire grandmother has issued a harrowing warning to others after a 16-month digital romance with a man half her age left her heartbroken and facing financial ruin.
Jacqueline Dube, 61, a professional chef from St Albans, says she “blames herself” after falling for a 26-year-old Egyptian pastry chef she met during a TikTok live stream. What began as “harmless” flattery quickly spiraled into an international saga that cost her approximately £4,000—a sum that has now left her unable to pay her basic bills.
From TikTok to Tears
The pair’s connection began 16 months ago when the man, based in Alexandria, joined a live stream Jacqueline was hosting with her niece. After he called her “beautiful,” they moved their conversation to WhatsApp. Jacqueline admits she was initially skeptical of the 35-year age gap but was quickly won over by his persistent declarations of love.
”He made me feel special and wanted,” Jacqueline told Sell Us Your Story. “He swore to Allah that he loved me and told me he loved me to the moon and back.”
Despite never having met in person, the man introduced Jacqueline to his family via video call. They appeared to welcome her, with the man even announcing their intention to marry before a formal proposal had ever occurred.
The Cost of Love
Driven by a “weird attachment” developed after a decade of being single, Jacqueline flew 2,500 miles to Egypt in September 2025. During the eight-day trip, she stayed with his family and funded various outings and meals.
A second trip followed in November 2025, marked by a limousine greeting and a romantic proposal. The couple began planning a lavish wedding in Cairo. However, upon returning to the UK in December, the cold reality of her finances set in.
Jacqueline calculated that between flights, gifts, and accommodation, she had offloaded £4,000. When she confronted her fiancé about the financial strain, the relationship rapidly disintegrated.
”I wanted to prove to people that they were wrong about us,” she admitted. “Now I see what people warned me about. I’m in debt. I’ve not been able to pay my bills.”
A Growing Trend
Jacqueline’s story coincides with a sharp rise in “romance fraud” across the UK. According to recent 2025-2026 data from TSB and Barclays, romance scams have surged by nearly 20% year-on-year.
Experts note that victims over the age of 55 are frequently targeted, with losses often exceeding £8,000 on average. In Jacqueline’s case, while the emotional bond felt real, the financial pattern—initial flattery followed by indirect financial dependency—aligns with the “slow-burn” manipulation tactics used by international scammers.
The Egyptian man, when approached for comment, reportedly dismissed Jacqueline’s claims, calling her “crazy.”
For Jacqueline, the dream of a new life in the sun has ended in a St Albans winter of regret. “You can’t help who you love,” she said, “but I should never have got on that plane.”
