The Southern Solidarity Alliance (SSA) has issued a stark warning to the Federal Government, declaring that the relentless surge in banditry, kidnapping, and coordinated armed attacks across Southern Nigeria has escalated into a full-blown national security emergency.
In a decisive communiqué signed by National Coordinator Ndubuisi Okafor and Publicity Director Emmanuel Ogheneganaye, the group stated that expanding criminal syndicates are systematically dismantling public safety, paralyzing local commerce, and shattering communal peace.
A Region Under Siege
The alliance pointed out a dangerous escalation in sophisticated, cross-border criminal networks breaching previously stable enclaves. The group detailed a troubling pattern of violence cutting across the South-West, South-East, and South-South geopolitical zones:
- South-West: Growing banditry networks invading rural hubs in Ogun and Osun states, alongside the alarming interception of armed criminal suspects in transit through Lagos.
- Oyo State Crisis: The SSA specifically highlighted targeted abductions of schoolchildren and teachers within the Oriire Local Government Area, warning that educational institutions and vulnerable rural populations have become primary soft targets.
- South-East & South-South: Widespread kidnapping cells and violent attacks spanning Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Edo states.
The statement raised immediate alarms over the aggressive, unlawful occupation of communal lands and ancestral forests by armed herdsmen and foreign criminal actors, stating, “Our ancestral forests are forcefully occupied by strangers while we look on.”
The Blueprint for Radical Security Reform
Arguing that conventional defense strategies are falling short against highly mobile criminal networks, the SSA outlined a multi-tiered tactical framework demanding collaborative action from President Bola Tinubu, state governors, and local government chairmen.
The alliance strongly condemned ongoing federal frameworks that allow for backchannel negotiations or the rehabilitation of “repentant” terrorists. They argued that these soft-handed policies have heavily backfired, inadvertently rewarding criminal networks and worsening the national crisis. Instead, the group urged the presidency to aggressively source advanced military hardware and tactical intelligence by partnering with foreign nations experienced in asymmetric counter-terrorism operations.
Closing the Governance Gap
The SSA emphasized that military interventions alone cannot permanently fix the crisis without addressing underlying social vulnerabilities. The group noted that severe governance gaps in rural borders create highly fertile breeding grounds for criminal recruitment.
To break the cycle of violence, the alliance is demanding that state and local authorities back up their security operations with deliberate, aggressive investments in youth empowerment schemes, rural economic revitalization, and direct job creation.
