Political tensions in Anambra State have escalated sharply following a heated exchange between Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration and the media camp of former Governor Peter Obi, standard-bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The verbal feud erupted after the Anambra State Government used its official X handle to urge local voters, particularly supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to reject Obi in the upcoming electoral cycle. The state government post branded any potential vote for the former governor as a “betrayal” of the state.
The Obi Camp’s Counter-Offensive
Reacting to the development, Idris Zekeri Jnr., spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), dismissed the administration’s campaign as an unproductive distraction. Invoking the traditional Igbo adage, “adịghị eburu onye ara ara n’ahịa” (avoiding joining a mad person in the public square), Obi’s team asserted that the governor is excessively preoccupied with undermining the former governor during executive council meetings.
The NDC machinery further stepped up its defense through Theo Abu Agada, the party’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications. Agada declared that the ruling party in the state is visibly rattled by Obi’s growing momentum.
”It is now clear, even to the blind, that the Anambra State Government is threatened by the growing popularity of our presidential candidate… The NDC is going to win big in Anambra, and there is nothing Soludo and his minions in APGA can do about it,” Agada stated.
Governance, Resources, and Allegations
Beyond the political sparring, Obi’s camp levied sharp criticisms against the current administration’s handling of state affairs:
- Disaster Management & Infrastructure: The opposition accused Soludo of failing to act on Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) flood warnings and neglecting urban development master plans initially established with UN-Habitat during Obi’s tenure.
- Fiscal Allocations vs. Performance: The camp contrasted the economic records, claiming Soludo manages an average monthly allocation of roughly \text{₦}25\text{ billion}—significantly higher than the \text{₦}3\text{ billion} monthly average during Obi’s administration—while pointing to a drop in state performance indices and deteriorating infrastructure.
- Digital Campaign Claims: POMR alleged that the state government has mobilized hundreds of online operatives to orchestrate coordinated attacks against the former governor, a tactic they described as a misuse of public resources.
As the build-up to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum, political analysts expect the battleground in Anambra to intensify further as both APGA and the NDC vie for grassroots supremacy.
