ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – A joint security operation took a tragic turn in Magbon Village, within the Mowe axis of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, as suspected kidnappers killed a soldier and four hostages following a fierce gun duel.
The Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 35 Artillery Brigade, Major Idereghi Akari, confirmed the devastating incident in an official statement on Tuesday. The casualties included a local hunter who was assisting the security forces in navigating the difficult terrain, alongside three other victims whose bodies were recovered after a rigorous search of the surrounding creeks.
The Ambush at the Dredging Site
The violence broke out on Monday, June 8, 2026, when a combined patrol team of troops from the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, and operatives of the Nigerian Police Force responded to an urgent distress call. Gunmen had stormed a local dredging site, targeting Chinese expatriates and a prominent sand miner popularly known in the community as “Kapo.”
Upon arriving at the scene to foil the abduction, the security team was ambushed by the heavily armed syndicate, sparking an intense firefight.
”Operatives responded professionally, resulting in the neutralization of one of the suspected kidnappers,” Major Akari stated. “The remaining assailants abandoned their primary mission and withdrew through the dense forest terrain toward the Ogun River.”
Human Shields and Cold-Blooded Murder
As the criminals retreated, they seized five individuals to use as human shields to hinder the advance of a reinforcing Quick Response Force. To evade tracking, the gang executed four of the hostages in cold blood before fleeing across the river channel in a getaway boat.
One hostage miraculously managed to escape the slaughter. The survivor later recounted the harrowing ordeal to security officials, revealing that the fleeing criminals carried the corpse of their neutralized colleague along with them during their escape.
Casualties and Security Response
The gun battle exacted a heavy toll on the security forces. Aside from the soldier who lost his life, another military officer and two policemen sustained severe gunshot injuries.
The Ogun State Police Command, speaking through its Public Relations Officer, clarified that the attack was strictly a criminal kidnapping enterprise and dismissed mounting social media rumors linking the incident to regional banditry.
The bodies of the fallen soldier and the four recovered hostages have been deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary in Sagamu. The injured personnel are currently receiving intensive medical treatment at an undisclosed facility.
Meanwhile, a massive manhunt has been launched across the border watercraft networks. The Quick Response Force, alongside collaborative security agencies, has significantly intensified patrols and intelligence surveillance across the Mowe-Magbon general area to restore public confidence and track down the fleeing killers
