Six Foreign Nationals Die in Eastern Cape Inferno

​TSOMO — A quiet Tuesday morning turned into a harrowing tragedy when a fierce blaze ripped through the MAA Cash and Carry along Tsomo Main Street, claiming the lives of six Bangladeshi nationals and leaving a community in mourning.

​The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an inquest docket following the disaster, which unfolded in the early hours of 28 July 2026.

​According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, patrol officers near the Tsomo Police Station heard a loud explosion at approximately 03:40. Tracking a heavy shroud of smoke, officers rushed to the commercial property to find the building heavily engulfed in flames.

​Aware that individuals resided in the back quarters of the store, police, private security personnel, and local community members made desperate efforts to breach the burning structure. While one occupant managed to escape the inferno, six others remained trapped.

​Firefighters battled adverse conditions, fighting thick smoke and persistent rain before successfully subduing the flames. All six victims were recovered from the wreckage and subsequently identified by their employer.

​Emergency Medical Services, Provincial Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) units, and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) secured the area for processing. Five of the victims have been provisionally identified as Md Faisal (25), Md Fahim (28), Shamim Hasan (30), Mohammad Apon (24), and Rajik Bepari (52). A seventh occupant who survived the fire remains hospitalized in critical condition at Queenstown Hospital.

​The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria expressed profound shock and sorrow over the tragedy. High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi is scheduled to visit Tsomo to survey the disaster zone, meet with local administrative and police officials, and coordinate repatriation assistance for the bereaved families.

​While preliminary assessments by SAPS indicate no immediate suspicion of foul play, forensic teams and investigators continue to comb through the debris to establish the exact cause of the explosion and subsequent fire.
