Nigeria has arrived at one of the world’s most important diplomatic gatherings with a message that sounds simple but carries considerable weight: Nigeria will negotiate from national interest.

Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in New York on Monday to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly, representing President Bola Tinubu.

Shettima said Nigeria’s engagement would be guided by national interest, commitment to multilateralism and the administration’s call for reforms to global institutions.

Nigeria’s national statement is expected on Thursday.

Why UNGA matters

The United Nations General Assembly is not simply an annual gathering where presidents make speeches. It is a marketplace of diplomatic interests.

The world’s 193 UN member states have representation in the General Assembly and each has one vote. The body debates issues ranging from peace and security to development, climate, finance and international cooperation.

The high-level week also creates something speeches alone cannot provide: access.

Presidents and ministers meet other governments. Countries negotiate behind closed doors. Officials meet development partners. Businesses and investors engage governments. Countries build coalitions around resolutions.

For a country like Nigeria, the value therefore lies partly in what happens outside the main speech.

Nigeria can use the gathering to press its interests on debt, development finance, climate funding, technology access, security cooperation and Africa’s representation in global institutions.

Shettima said Nigeria intends to pursue reforms of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, technology access and stronger African representation in global decision-making.

What Nigeria wants

The administration’s argument is that global institutions created decades ago no longer fully reflect today’s economic and demographic realities.

Nigeria wants developing countries to have greater influence in institutions that shape international finance and economic policy.

It also wants stronger African representation in global decision-making. That is not unique to Nigeria. African governments have increasingly argued that a continent of more than a billion people should have greater influence over institutions that make decisions affecting its economies and security.

But diplomacy is rarely about making demands alone. Nigeria will also need partners willing to support those demands.

That is where bilateral meetings become important. Shettima is expected to meet world leaders, international organisations and development partners during the high-level week.

For Nigeria, those meetings can translate into discussions on investment, security, trade, infrastructure, climate finance and technology.

Tinubu’s absence

The delegation is also notable because Tinubu is not attending the gathering personally.

The Presidency has said Shettima will represent him and lead the Nigerian delegation. The administration has maintained that Nigeria’s international interests will remain adequately represented despite the President’s absence.

The choice of Shettima also means Nigeria’s top political leadership is still represented at the highest level.

The question now is what the delegation brings home.

UNGA speeches do not create jobs by themselves. Declarations about multilateralism do not automatically attract investment.

But diplomacy can create the relationships, agreements and political access from which practical outcomes emerge.

That is the test Nigeria faces in New York. The country is not going there merely to speak. It is going there to negotiate. ValidViewNetwork reports.
