THE HAGUE – In a ceremony steeped in both tradition and transformation, Rob Jetten was sworn in today as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, shattering two major glass ceilings in Dutch political history. At 38, the leader of the centrist Democrats 66 (D66) becomes the nation’s youngest-ever premier and the first openly gay individual to lead the country.
Standing before King Willem-Alexander at the Huis ten Bosch Palace, Jetten took the oath of office to lead a three-party minority coalition. The event marks a sharp pivot from the populist turbulence of the previous year, following a snap election that saw Jetten’s “positive message” narrowly defeat the far-right Freedom Party (PVV) of Geert Wilders.
A New Generation at the Helm
Jetten’s ascent represents a remarkable personal and political rebranding. Once nicknamed “Robot Jetten” for his rehearsed speaking style, the new Prime Minister won over the electorate with a more relaxed, social-media-savvy persona and a staunchly pro-European platform.
His government, formed alongside the VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy) and the CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal), faces an immediate uphill battle. With only 66 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, the “Jetten I” cabinet must negotiate with opposition parties to pass every major piece of legislation.
The Challenges Ahead
The new administration inherits a nation divided by climate policy and migration. Despite Jetten’s background as a climate champion, his inaugural day was met with protests from Extinction Rebellion activists, who argue the coalition’s compromises do not go far enough.
The coalition’s agenda includes:
- Fiscal Restraint: Choosing budget cuts over deficits to fund military investments.
- Strict Migration: Continuing a crackdown on family reunification and migration flows.
- European Integration: Re-centering the Netherlands as a key player in EU and NATO cooperation.
As Jetten moves into the “Torentje” (the Prime Minister’s office), he carries the weight of a historic mandate. “It is possible to beat populism if you campaign with a positive message,” Jetten told supporters. Now, he must prove that a message of hope can survive the pragmatic rigors of minority governance.
