Canadian filmmaker Ted Kotcheff, best known for directing Weekend at Bernie’s and First Blood, passed away at the age of 94 on April 10, 2025, in Nuevo Nayarit, Mexico. His death was confirmed by his family, though the cause remains undisclosed.

Born in Toronto on April 7, 1931, Kotcheff’s career spanned six decades. He began in Canadian television before moving to the U.K., where he gained recognition for his work in film and TV. His notable works include Wake in Fright (1971), The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), and North Dallas Forty (1979). He also served as an executive producer on Law & Order: SVU for over a decade.
Kotcheff’s legacy is marked by his versatility across genres, from action classics like First Blood to comedies such as Weekend at Bernie’s. He was celebrated for his storytelling and received numerous accolades, including a lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild of Canada in 2011.
